Surf Lifesaving New Zealand and BP
- Surf Lifesaving New Zealand (SLSNZ) is the national charity responsible for supporting 74 member clubs across New Zealand. This includes supporting these clubs to deliver Surf Lifeguard patrols at 92 New Zealand beaches, providing training and education opportunities for members – whom are usually volunteers that deliver a professional standard of service to the New Zealand public. Essentially, SLSNZ are an emergency service with 18,000 members of volunteer Surf Lifeguards and the service they provide to Aotearoa.
- BP has been operating in New Zealand since 1946, with 96 company-owned and 112 independently owned and operated BP branded retails sites, 58 truck stops and nine terminal across the country. BP maintains a keen interest in local communities including the significant partnership with Surf Lifesaving New Zealand.
- The BP and SLSNZ partnership began in 1968 and is believed to be the longest unbroken corporate partnership in NZ history. Every year, the 74 SLSNZ clubs receive a $500 BP gift card to assist with their running costs. BP donated an Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) to one lucky club each year and this is worth $25,000. BP recognises the skills of our Surf Lifeguards with $6000 worth of BP gift cards for clubs in our BP rescue of the month and BP Rescue of the Year Awards. BP also supports BP Leaders for Life which is a one-year programme to develop future leaders – this programme alone amounting to $150,000 annually. In return for their support, SLSNZ provides BP branding opportunities on all 250+ IRBs, signage at clubs, BP branding on rescue tubes, naming rights for IRB sport events and access to Surf Life Saving intellectual property.
