Ministry of Social Development

The Ministry of Social Development includes Work & Income, Seniors (paying superannuation) and Student Services (Student Loans), Family and Community Services and the Office of Disability Issues.  The former Child Youth and Family is now a separate Ministry called Orangi Tamariki. Through Work & Income the 300,000 working age adults who depend on a welfare benefit are supported. This currently includes 150,000 on the disability-related benefits (either the shorter-term Job Seeker Support or the longer term Supported Living Payment). The Disability Allowance supplementary assistance is available to most people with a Community Service Card.

Mobile Health

Our very unique custom-built mobile operating theatre enables us to provide elective day surgery to 25 rural towns in New Zealand. After 17 years and 25,000 operations, this service has proven to be safe and efficient method to deliver equitable access to elective surgery for many of the 600,000 kiwis living in rural New Zealand.

The New Zealand Medical Association (NZMA) is the country's only pan-professional medical organisation in New Zealand representing the collective interests of all doctors. Members come from all disciplines within the medical profession, and include specialists, general practitioners, doctors-in-training and medical students. 

NZMA's General Practitioner Council (GPC) represents the interests of GPs and advocates on a diverse range of issues such as better GP education and training, after hours services and supporting changes to our health system that lead to better patient outcomes.
GPC members openly debate issues of concern to general practice and develop consensus policy that benefits our patients and professional environment.  NZMA is  a member of the NZ General Practice Leaders' Forum and has a representative on PSAAP.
